In 1945 Arts & Architecture magazine began a program where they commissioned architects to build model homes as examples of housing that could accommodate the millions of U.S. troops returning from the war.

Thirty-six of these case study houses were designed during the program's twenty-year run (see #8 here), and most are located around Los Angeles.

Case Study House #22, also known as the Stahl House, was designed by Pierre Koenig and built in 1959 in the Hollywood Hills. You can see it in a number of films including Why Do Fools Fall In Love, Galaxy Quest and The Thirteenth Floor.

The Mulholland Safehouse in Grand Theft Auto's fictional city of Los Santos is based on architect Pierre Koenig's iconic Stahl House in Los Angeles.

Jerry Seinfeld picks up comedy legend Carl Reiner in a 1960 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II, and they head over to the Norm's in West Hollywood for some coffee in Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

Interestingly, several of the diners at this location are designed to resemble auto showrooms. The namesake of the chain, Norm Roybark, was a used-car salesman who founded the chain in 1949 (this location opened in 1957).

The Rainbow Bar and Grill opened on the Sunset Strip on April 16, 1972 with a party for Elton John. Since then, it has been a fixture of the L.A. rock scene.

Led Zeppelin made this restaurant their L.A. hangout. Anthony Kiedis recounted in his book Scar Tissue about being at the bar with his father while members of the Led Zeppelin were there.

Upstairs from the Rainbow Bar and Grill is the exclusive club, "Over the Rainbow".

John Belushi ate his last meal here (lentil soup) in booth #16.

Before it became the Rainbow, the place was called the Villa Nova restaurant. The Villa Nova was owned by film director Vincente Minnelli (married to Judy Garland). Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe met at the Villa Nova in 1952 on a blind date.

Built in 1927 by a prominent Los Angeles lawyer, the Chateau Marmont was constructed in a Gothic design to mimic a royal retreat in France's Loire Valley.

The series of bungalows have been a favorite spot for Hollywood celebrities for years.

On March 4, 1982, John Belushi had been partying at the secret club above the Roxy called On The Rox, and later at The Rainbow Room.

Belushi went back to the Chateau Marmont Bungalow #3 with Cathy Smith (former back-up singer for The Band and drug dealer) and Nelson Lyon (writer for SNL). Belushi kept asking Smith to shoot him up with heroin since he was afraid of needles.

That night, Robin Williams stopped by and did some lines with the group but was creeped out by Smith. Robert DeNiro also stopped by around 3 a.m. and left shortly after.

Belushi was found by his personal trainer, Bill Wallace, the next day dead from a heroin overdose. He was 33 years old.
