seahaven downtown
from the truman show posted in movies by chewing_the_scenery
Although the simulated reality town of Seahaven in The Truman Show looks as if it could have been shot on a studio lot, it was actually filmed in Seaside, a planned community on Florida's panhandle. Seaside's central square served as Seahaven's downtown. A lot of the buildings, including Seahaven Life & Casualty where Jim Carrey worked, were just facades constructed for the movie, but if you visit, you can stop in at Modica Market (aka Goodies) where Marlon stocked shelves.
hamtramck disneyland
from dmytro szylak posted in art and design by ratsnamgod
This house has been the home of Dmytro Szylak since 1950. After retiring from the General Motors assembly line in 1992, Szylak decided to turn the house into a colorful, dense, horse-filled work of art.
While the front of the house on Klinger St has some interesting objects, the main attraction can be found in the alley.
ketchum hemingway house
from ernest hemingway posted in literature by pete_nice
Situated on 12 acres near the Silver Creek valley, this home was purchased by the Hemingways in 1959 after they were forced to leave Cuba abruptly. In 1961, Ernest Hemingway committed suicide in this residence with a shotgun.
In 1989, the home was bequeathed by Mary Hemingway to the Nature Conservancy with the request that the home and site be maintained as a wilderness preserve. However, this home is something of an anomaly for TNC, whose typical mission is not of historical preservation but of preservation of landscapes and ecosystems.
A board of directors at the Idaho Hemingway House Foundation maintains the location, and they are trying to make the home accessible as a writer's retreat or as a museum. However, residences of the surrounding affluent neighborhood are resistant to the traffic that either of those plans would bring. As of now, the home is vacant and as it was acquired in 1986.
