Stephen Foster, songwriter of several traditional American songs such as "Oh! Susanna," "Camptown Races," "My Old Kentucky Home," and "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair," died at the North American Hotel on January 13, 1864 after a fever caused him to fall on a washbasin and shatter it with his head.

Foster is buried at the Allegheny Cemetery. He was 37 years old when he died.

On December 11, 1964, Sam Cooke ran up to the manager's office at this motel, clad only in a shoe and a sports jacket.

Although the circumstances leading up to and after that encounter are still debated, the results were the same: Sam Cooke was fatally shot in the torso. He was 33 years old.

Reportedly, his last words were, "Lady, You Shot Me."

where jonathan melvoin died

On July 12, 1996, Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlain and keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin were sharing a room at the Regency Hotel on Park Ave. They were also sharing heroin- the Pumpkins had recently done an Asian tour recently the readily available heroin in Thailand had revived addiction in both of them.

Shortly before midnight on July 11th, both of the musicians took some heroin. A couple of hours later, Chamberlain woke up to find Melvoin unconscious and was unable to revive him. When the paramedics, they pronounced Melvoin DOA from an overdose.

Melvoin was a multi-instrumental talent, a graduate of Julliard who played drums in the Dickies and keyboards for Prince and the Smashing Pumpkins.

On Saturday, Oct. 21, 1995, Shannon Hoon was found dead from a heroin overdose in the Blind Melon tour bus near Kingsway Studios, where the band had recorded their second album, Soup, earlier that year. He was 28 years old.

On April 2, 1995, Wrestlemania XI was held at the Hartford Civic Center (now called the XL Center).

The main event of Wrestlemania 11 featured Lawrence Taylor (NFL linebacker from the NY Giants) beating Bam Bam Bigelow.

The WWF championship saw Diesel (escorted by Pamela Anderson) defeating Shawn Michaels (with support by Sid and Jenny McCarthy).
