hollywood hills coffee shop
from swingers posted in movies by chewing_the_scenery
Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn, both struggling to find work in the mid-90s, hammered out the screenplay for Swingers during afternoons at the Hollywood Hills Coffee Shop on the bottom floor of the Best Western near the 101 freeway. The restaurant shows up at the beginning and end of the movie and also when Trent dances on the table after their night at The Derby.
New owners took over the space in 2001 and the restaurant now operates as the 101 Coffee Shop.
newfoundland depot
from the station agent (2003) posted in movies by pete_nice
Finbar McBride (Peter Dinklage) inherits this abandoned train depot in Newfoundland, NJ in the 2003 film The Station Agent.
The indie producers had to rough up the exterior with crackle paint for the film, but the original structure from 1872 still stands.

As an homage to Scorsese, Mike, Trent and Sue get a tracking shot of their own in Swingers when they enter The Derby through the back entrance to see Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.
The Derby in Los Feliz was originally a branch of the Brown Derby chain of restaurants in LA before being converted into a nightclub in 1985. It closed down in 2009.
lynyrd skynyrd plane crash
from lynyrd skynyrd posted in music by pete_nice
On October 20, 1977, Lynyrd Skynyrd and their entourage were flying in a chartered Convair CV-300 when the plane ran out of fuel and crashed in Gillsburg, Mississippi, near the end of its flight from Greenville, SC, to Baton Rouge, LA.
Skynyrd lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist/vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray were all killed as a result of the crash. Twenty others survived.
The band was at their height of their popularity when the plane crashed, and many of the members who weren't killed were seriously injured. Since 1987, remaining members of the group have formed several different reiterations of the band.
Music trivia: The band's name is a mocking tribute to their gym teacher at Robert E. Lee High School, Leonard Skinner, who had a strict policy against long hair on boys.
patsy cline plane crash memorial
from patsy cline posted in music by pete_nice
On March 5, 1963, country singers Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas, and Hawkshaw Hawkins were being flown from Kansas City, KA to Nashville, TN in a Piper PA-24 Comanche plane. The plane was piloted by Cline's manager Randy Hughes, who was not an instrument-rated pilot and relied on visual flight rules.
The inclement weather on that night caused the plane to crash at this location, where all aboard died. An inscribed rock on a cement slab marks the location. Patsy Cline was 30 years old.
