jim morrison’s grandparents home

from the doors, jim morrison posted in music by pete_nice

Jim Morrison went to live with his paternal grandparents in 1961-62, when he attended classes at St. Petersburg College (then a junior college).

The home was demolished on Aug. 15, 2005. The developers (prominent Scientologist realtors in the area) auctioned the doors (get it?) on eBay to raise money for a charity. A series of condo towers were created on the property, and the developers have stated they would place a memorial plaque in the south tower where Jim Morrison would have lived.

The name The Doors comes from a William Blake quote: "“If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite.”

jim morrison’s birthplace

On December 8, 1943, James Douglas "Jim" Morrison was born at Brevard Hospital at this location.

Since then, the building has changed ownership many times, but has kept its general construction, most notably the curved-linear facade.

The son of a future Navy rear admiral (George Stephen Morrison), the Morrisons moved a great deal while Jim was growing up. The elder Morrison was unsupportive of Jim's musical ambitions, and by the time Jim Morrison had graduated from UCLA he had cut ties with his family.

When a neighbor brought over The Doors debut album to George Morrison, he wrote Jim a letter asking him, "to give up any idea of singing or any connection with a music group because of what I consider to be a complete lack of talent in this direction.'

The relationship was nonexistent after that point.

the hemingway home

from ernest hemingway posted in literature by elvis_crabs

Hemingway first arrived with his wife Pauline to Key West in 1928. During a three-week wait for a car to be delivered, Hemingway finished A Farewell to Arms in Key West. Also completed at this location were the short story classics "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber."

After a couple of seasons in Key West, Pauline's Uncle Gus purchased this home for them. The home is filled with mementos of their time in Europe, as well as trophies from Hemingway's African safaris and hunts to the American west.

The home and grounds were a filming location for the 1988 James Bond film, Licence to Kill.

Today, the house is known as The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, and is open to the public for tours.
