dymaxion car factory

from dymaxion car, buckminster fuller posted in technology by corporate_sunshine

On July 12, 1933, the first three-wheeled, multi-directional Dymaxion car rolled off the factory floor at this location. Housed in the former factory building of the Locomobile company, the Dymaxion car was developed by Buckminster Fuller as an addition to his line of Dymaxion brand products developed to improve all of humanity's living conditions.

The Dymaxion car could carry 11 passengers and reached a documented speed of 90 mph. The rear wheel (of the three-wheeled car) powered and steered the vehicle, a departure from contemporary design.

At the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, an accident with the Dymaxion car damaged the first prototype badly, killing the driver, and seriously injuring the two passengers; one of whom was William Sempill, aviation pioneer and Japanese spy.

Investors backed out, partially out of fears that the new, efficient and economical car would eliminate current vehicle distribution channels and second-hand markets.

amsterdam hilton hotel

from heman brood, john lennon, yoko ono posted in music by prof_improbable

On July 11, 2001, the Dutch singer/pianist/painter/actor/celebrity Herman Brood committed suicide by jumping off the roof of the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel. He was 54 years old.

Brood had success as a rock singer and performer in the Netherlands in the late 70's and 80's. He had re-recorded his domestic hit, Saturday Night, for the English speaking market, and the song made it to #35 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Brood had struggled publicly with drug and alcohol addiction, and he had grown despondent over the failure of his treatment and continuing medical problems. His suicide caused a shockwave through the Dutch arts scene.

Before his cremation, Brood's casket was driven from the Hilton hotel to Paradiso (a music venue converted from an old church), where the streets were lined with thousands of spectators.

jimi hendrix memorial

from jimi hendrix posted in music by tacopolis

Located in the Greenwood Memorial Park of Renton, WA (a suburb SE of Seattle) is the Jimi Hendrix Memorial.

Semi-completed in 2002, it's the final resting place of Jimi, as well as some members of his family (the family memorial contains some 54 plots). The memorial is also decorated with pictures of Hendrix, lyrics, his signature engraved in a stone, and the head stone of his previous grave.

The centerpiece of the memorial is a covered structure held up by three columns that is supposed to house a bronze statue of Jimi in the future. The project has been held up since the main proponent, Jimi's father Al Hendrix, died in 2002.

The memorial is free and open to the public.
