the sherlock holmes museum

from sherlock holmes posted in literature by chewing_the_scenery

Even though it's technically located between 237 and 241, the official address of the Sherlock Holmes Museum in London is 221B Baker Street, the address where Sherlock and Watson lived in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories.

For many years, the Abbey National building on Baker Street received mail delivered to 221B (from fans or else crazies hoping to correspond with the fictional Sherlock himself) until the museum, founded in 1990, decided that somehow they could claim the 221B address. The dispute lasted until Abbey National vacated their building in 2005.

The museum features Holmes memorabilia and is modeled after the description of the residence in the stories.

jesse james home museum

from jesse james posted in history by donkeyoti

The Jesse James Home is the home where the infamous outlaw Jesse James was killed on April 3, 1882.

James (aged 34) had been an outlaw almost half his life. He was shot by fellow gang member, Bob Ford, to collect a $10,000 reward. The bullet entered behind his right ear and — some believe — came out over his left eye, leaving the legendary bullet hole.

The museum features artifacts from Jesse's life and death, as well as those of Frank James and the Ford brothers. Also in the museum is evidence from the 1995 exhumation, which proved with 99.7% certainty that the person killed in this house was, in fact, Jesse James.

tintin fire escape mural

from tintin, hergé posted in comic books by nevereatshreddedwheat

A five-story-tall scene from The Adventures of Tintin showing Haddock and Tintin on a fire escape is painted on the side of a building on Rue de l'Etuve in Brussels. It's located just down from the Manneken Pis sculpture, Brussels' famous landmark of a young boy pissing into a fountain.

The mural was painted in 2004 and comes from The Calculus Affair (#18 in the The Adventures of Tintin series), a 1950s cold war detective story about a sonic weapon of mass destruction.
