northern lights records (former)

from hüsker dü, husker du posted in music by corporate_sunshine

A record store that existed until the 90's, Northern Lights Records was located at the corner of 7th street and Hennepin Ave. The former location of the Music City record store, the site has since been renovated to become part of the Pantages Theatre.

In late 1979, Hüsker Dü recorded the Northern Lights Demos here with friend/co-worker Colin Mansfield. As Mansfield recalled:
"I was involved in recording most (probably all --it's a long time ago) of the recordings made in the basement of Northern Lights. Both Greg and I were working there (Greg in the record/head shop, and I was setting up Twin Cities Imports in the basement)."

The track listing for this demo:
Picture Of You
Can't See You Any More
The Truth Hurts
Do You Remember?
Sore Eyes

The song "Love Street" was actually referring to Rothdell Trail and the many hippies and flower children that would mill about it back in the sixites. Jim Morrison and his girlfriend, Pam Courson, lived at this address in a brown wooden house, visiting the nearby Laurel Canyon Store often.

laurel canyon store

from jim morrison the doors, frank zappa posted in music by pete_nice

Immortalized in the song "Love Street" by the Doors, this is "the place where the creatures meet." Jim Morrison used to live with his girlfriend Pam near this store in the 60's, and they would meet up with the other musicians that lived in the area (Frank Zappa, David Crosby, Mama Cass, Joni Mitchell) to drink, hang out, and play music on the porch.

Jennifer Aniston used to work here as a cashier and in the deli.

the hollywood bowl

from the beatles, the doors posted in music by pete_nice

The largest natural amphitheater in the United States (seating capacity around 18,000), the Hollywood Bowl has seen quite a bit of action. The "bowl" portion refers to the concave hillside the amphitheater is carved into.

Initially surveyed in 1919, the bowl opened as "Daisy Dell" on July 11, 1922, using little more than a stage, wooden benches, and the natural surroundings.

In 1927, Frank Lloyd Wright designed an acoustic band shell that only lasted one season (it was deemed to avant-garde). So the next year he designed another one.

The physical nature of the Hollywood Bowl has increasingly changed over the years. More bands have performed (and movie scenes shot) here than can be listed. Some noteworthy events were the Beatles performances here in '64/'65 (released as The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl) and the July 5, 1968 Doors concert that became a film and live album (The Doors, Live at the Hollywood Bowl).
