The American writer Stephen Crane (1871-1900), author of The Red Badge of Courage and numerous short stories, lived in this modest home with his thirteen siblings as a youth.
Although Crane lived to be only 28 years old, he was a prolific essayist, poet, short story writer, novelist, and war correspondent. After he died in Germany in 1900, Crane was buried in Hillside, NJ.
Today, the Stephen Crane House is a cultural hub for Asbury Park, hosting readings, film screenings, theatrical performances, and more.
the stone pony
from bruce springsteen, jon bon jovi posted in music by pete_nice
The Stone Pony, located in the Jersey seaside town of Asbury Park, is one of the most recognized small venues in the world. Many artists have honed their skills here, including Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen.
The Boss has played here nearly 90 times, but except for the occasional children's school fund-raiser, he usually just sits in with another band. Despite public perception to the contrary, Springsteen already had two albums completed when The Stone Pony opened in 1974.
Professional wrestler Bam Bam Bigelow used to work as a bouncer at the Stone Pony before he toured the wrestling circuit.
fine line music cafe
from the pixies posted in music by crabapple
In January of 1993, Frank Black disbanded The Pixies, notifying guitarist Joey Santiago via a phone call, while sending a fax to bassist Kim Deal and drummer David Lovering. At the time, The Pixies had enjoyed only moderate success in the US, while have a much larger following in Europe.
Since then, The Pixies have arguably become one of the most influential bands in the indie rock genre.
On April 13, 2004, after eleven years of hiatus, The Pixies played their first reunion show at the Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis, MN. The successful show was the beginning of a series of shows that led to a national and international tour.
During this show, denizens of the city who couldn't get tickets to the sold-out show hung out in the alley to listen it. It was pretty cool.
The build-up to the reunion show and the subsequent tour is the subject of the 2006 documentary loudQUIETloud: A Film About The Pixies.
the johnson inn
from beautiful girls posted in movies by chewing_the_scenery
If Hollywood stopped making movies about high school reunions and the big city guy returning to his small hometown, I don't think anyone would care. Stillwater, Minnesota was turned into Knights Ridge, Massachusetts, the fictional small hometown in Beautiful Girls. Tommy (Matt Dillon), Paul (Michael Rapaport) and two other guys whose faces (but not their names) you would recognize have never left this fictional small town and drink frequently at The Johnson Inn.
The Marine General Store on the St. Croix north of Stillwater was used as the exterior of their favorite bar. The interior scenes were shot at Winfield Potters, a former restaurant in St. Anthony Main in Minneapolis.
energy park studios
from mst3k:the movie, a simple plan posted in movies by pete_nice
Located in the scenic industrial Energy Park area of St. Paul, Energy Park Studios was a filming studio that saw a number of films created within its walls: Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999), Jingle All the Way (1996), A Simple Plan (1998), Grumpier Old Men (1995), Little Big League (1994) and more.
In 1996, locally-produced cult TV series Mystery Science Theater 3000 shot their theatrical release at Energy Park studios.
The number of 90's films shot in the area was partially due to concerted efforts made by then Gov. Jesse "The Mind" Ventura (former professional wrestler/Navy Seal/star of the film Predator) to attract the film industry to work in the state.
Energy Park Studios is currently closed and the building has been converted to the Hmong College Prep Academy.
