sutro baths

from frank black and the catholics posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat

The Sutro Baths, opened in 1896, were an enormous covered swimming pool complex in western San Francisco. It had seven pools filled with water from the ocean with six of them kept at temperatures ranging from hot to cold. Over the course of its operation until it closed in 1966 it also featured a concert hall, ice skating rink and a huge collection of owner Adolph Sutro's stuffed animals and other oddities. The structure burned down in 1966 leaving behind the ruins which are now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The photo on the cover of the Frank Black and the Catholics album Dog in the Sand was shot here. It's a perfectly boring album cover, but I was just glad it didn't make my eyes bleed like all of the other Frank Black and the Catholics album artwork.

harrison square

The photo for Del the Funky Homosapien's comic book themed cover on his second album No Need for Alarm was shot at Harrison Square in Oakland's Chinatown. A lot of people say this album is uneven, which it is, but much of it is great if you can get past the misogyny of "Boo Boo Heads."

trude heller’s

from beastie boys, reagan youth posted in music by crabapple

Trude Heller's was a venue at the SE corner of 6th Ave and 9th St from the early 60's to the early 80's. Named after the proprietor, Heller also owned a record label, Tru-Glo-Town Records.

Joey Dee and the Starliters played at Trude Heller's (when Peter Criss was drumming, later to play with Kiss).

A Variety column from 1968 wrote, "Salvador Dali showed up at Trude Heller's Greenwich Village fruggery with his pet ocelot for his date."

The Beastie Boys played here with Reagan Youth and Even Worse in 1980. HR from Bad Brains saw them perform, and asked the Beastie Boys to open up for Bad Brains for the final night of Max's Kansas City.

under the brooklyn bridge

from 3rd bass posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat

I always thought the 1991 3rd Bass album Derelicts of Dialect was underrated, although it does have the worst skits of any hip-hop album ever (yes, even worse than The Score by the Fugees).

The cover photo with MC Serch, Pete Nice and Richie Rich dressed as derelicts was shot under the Brooklyn Bridge. The photo is credited to Michael Lavine who has also shot cover photography for The Notorious B.I.G. (Life After Death), Outkast (Stankonia) and the infamous Dwarves album cover Blood Guts and Pussy.

saint ann’s school

from beastie boys, mike d posted in music by crabapple

Saint Ann's School in Brooklyn Heights, NYC is a private school with rigorous programs in the arts, humanities, and sciences. Students do not receive grades at Saint Ann's, but receive full-page anecdotal reports for each individual.

In a 2004 survey conducted by The Wall Street Journal, Saint Ann's was rated the number one high school in the country for having the highest percentage of graduating seniors enroll in Ivy League colleges.

Beastie Boy Mike D attended the school, as did filmmaker Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture, and the HBO series Girls).
