katz’s delicatessen

from when harry met sally posted in movies by elvis_crabs

Katz's Delicatessen was the filming location for the legendary orgasm-faking scene with Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal from When Harry Met Sally.

Although Billy Crystal came up with the classic punchline ("I'll have what she's having"), the scene came out of conversations between director Rob Reiner and writer Nora Ephron. Rob Reiner did not initially believe Ephron's assertion on the manner, but after grilling female members of the staff in the production office, he was convinced.

Katz's Delicatessen now has a sign that hangs over the table that was featured in When Harry Met Sally. Katz's was also the site of Johnny Depp's character meeting with an FBI contact in the film Donnie Brasco, and was also featured in the films Across the Universe, Mary and Max, Enchanted, We Own the Night, and the TV show Law and Order.

east river park amphitheater

from wild style posted in movies by chewing_the_scenery

The East River Park Amphitheater in New York's Lower East Side was the site of the classic hip-hop movie Wild Style's final concert featuring The Fantastic Romantic 5, Chief Rocker Busy Bee and The Rock Steady Crew. Wild Style, from 1982, was about graffiti artist Zoro, played by real life graffiti pioneer Lee Quiñones. You can hear samples of the movie in "A to the K" by Cypress Hill, "Genesis" by Nas, "Professor Booty" by Beastie Boys and probably lots more that I don't know about.

The amphitheater, built in 1941, had fallen into disrepair, but it's since been remodeled and once again hosts public concerts.

To be considered a masterwork these paintings must be at least 5 feet in any direction and have been worked on for over a year.

the pod

from ween posted in music by pete_nice

Gene and Dean Ween recorded The Pod and Pure Guava at "the Pod," a fly-ridden shack they shared on a horse farm on Van Sant Road in Solebury Township.

They recorded both albums on a Tascam 4-track, and according to Deaner, they didn't even bother buying new tapes for Pure Guava but simply recorded over demo tapes that other bands had given them on the road.

This is arguably the band's "brown"-est period- a term they devised to describe anything "f*cked up in a good way."

As their producer and sometimes bass player Andrew Weiss put it:

"...you know, stuff's always so well-orchestrated, or tries to be, when people make records, but the best sound you're gonna get out of stomp box is when the battery's right at the point of dying and it sounds like it's being strangled or something. So it's kind of like those glorious mistakes are what you're lookin' for."

(Chocolate and Cheese, Hank Shteamer, 33 1/3 books)
