from sons of anarchy posted in television by chewing_the_scenery
Commerce Avenue in Tujunga, California was the fictional town of Charming's Main Street in Sons of Anarchy. Floyd's Barber shop, where Police Chief Unser gets an occasional trim and Jax throws Kohn through a plate glass window, was located here not far from Zobelle's cigar store.
“this land is your land”
from woody guthrie posted in music by pete_nice
In the early months of 1940, Woody Guthrie arrived in New York City. Dubbed "the Oklahoma cowboy" by his contemporaries, he was embraced by the leftist folk scene at the time.
On constant radio rotation at the time was Irving Berlin's "God Bless America." Guthrie found the song distasteful- unrealistic and complacent. On February 23, 1940, in a small boarding house at the corner of 43rd st and 6th Ave in NYC, he went about writing an answer to Berlin. Guthrie's response was the song "This Land is Your Land."
Adapting the melody from "When The World's On Fire" by the Carter family, "This Land is Your Land" has become a powerful national song, still open for interpretation today.
One of the original versions of the song had a final verse that goes like this:
"As I went walking, I saw a sign there,
And on the sign there, It said 'Private Property'
But on the other side, it didn't say nothing!
That side was made for you and me."

Zobelle's cigar shop was located in this storefront on Commerce Avenue next to the liquor store in season 2 of Sons of Anarchy. This stretch of Commerce Avenue in the northeast corner of Los Angeles stood in for Charming's downtown. Floyd's barbershop was right down the street.
the black swan
from the clash, the sex pistols posted in music by tacopolis
On July 4, 1976, at a music venue/pub at the bottom of Snig Hill and Bank Street, in the steel town of Sheffield, The Clash played their first live show.
On that day, The Clash had traveled up from London to open a show for The Sex Pistols. While The Sex Pistols had been together since February, The Clash had only been practicing for four weeks before the show.
Guitarist/vocalist Joe Strummer had had extensive experience with his pub rock The 101'ers, but bassist Paul Simonon could barely play, relying on Mick Jones to tune his bass during the set. Also performing in the band were Keith Levene (later with Public Image Ltd) and Terry Chimes on drums.
The set included four songs:
"Listen"
"Rabies"
"Ooh, Baby, Ooh (It's Not Over)"
"Protex Blue"
The Black Swan (sometimes called "The Muddy Duck") eventually became Boardwalk. The owners have been trying to sell the place for years- not sure if it's open now.
