the dude’s house
from the big lebowski posted in movies by donkeyoti
Located three blocks from the beach in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles, the Dude's cottage is one of a series of six on a quarter-acre lot that were constructed in 1928.
When The Big Lebowski came out in 1998, the area was much seedier (read: affordable) than it is today. The cottages were listed on the market in 2011 for $2,295,000.
freddie mercury lived (and died) here
from freddie mercury, queen posted in music by pete_nice
Freddie Mercury, lead singer of Queen, lived in this $6 million until his death (at this location) of AIDS-related pneumonia on November 24, 1991. Mercury did not announce to the world that he had AIDS until 24 hours prior to his death.
The very worldly Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara on September 5, 1946. The Bulsara family moved to India in 1947. Mercury began piano lessons and music theory as he attended boarding school in Panchgani, just outside Bombay. The family moved to England in 1963.
The Mercury house on Logan still stands today. His former girlfriend, Mary Austen, was very close to Mercury and inherited the house where she still lives today.
lakewood fairgrounds
from smokey and the bandit posted in movies by pete_nice
Built in 1916 on 117 acres of former Creek Indian land around a 15-acre lake, the Lakewood Fairgrounds were constructed for the home of the Southeastern Fair: an area that contained a circus big top, arcade games, vendors, and a large carousel that remained on the premises until 1967.
The fairgrounds were featured extensively in the 1977 film Smokey and the Bandit, including the beginning and the ending of the film, the "Truck Rodeo" drag race, the Bandit on his hammock, the gate crashing scene, and the "Southern Classic Race."
For the second Smokey sequel, the film crew returned to the fairgrounds to incorporate the destruction of the wooden roller coaster, the Greyhound, as part of the film.
Today, EUE/Screen Gems is building a studio complex on the grounds for tv and film production.
first christian church of north hollywood
from what about bob? posted in movies by pete_nice
The church also served as the location for the wedding of Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood in the ultra-cutesy and forgettable ending of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
No aliens were present at the ceremony. Or were they?...
the rialto
from run-dmc posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat
In the music video for "It's Tricky", Run-DMC bust up Penn and Teller's three-card Monte scam in front of downtown L.A.'s Rialto Theater, although the joke is on them when Penn and Teller impersonate the group on stage in Japan six months later in front of a crowd who evidently can't tell the difference.
The historic Rialto on Broadway opened in 1917 and closed in 1988. The rumor in fall of 2012 is that Urban Outfitters is interested in the building for a retail store.
