cheetah club

from jimi hendrix posted in music by pete_nice

Opened from May 28, 1966, and closed in the 1970s, the Cheetah Club was a disco and venue. The musical Hair got its start here, and so did the dance craze known as salsa.

Jimi Hendrix was playing shows here in 1966 when Keith Richards's girlfriend, Linda Keith, saw him perform. She told Chas Chandler (former bass player for the Animals) about him, and Chandler became Hendrix's manager, moved him to England, and helped him form The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

1970 isle of wight festival

from isle of wight, jimi hendrix posted in music by pete_nice

From August 26-31, 1970, anywhere from 500,000 to 800,000 people descended on the small hill of Afton Down, near the village of Freshwater, on the western end of the Isle of Wight to watch the third Isle of Wight Festival.

Coming the year after Woodstock, the 1970 festival boasted a line-up that included The Doors, The Who, Miles Davis, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Donovan, Sly & the Family Stone, Kris Kristofferson, Leonard Cohen and the star of the festival, Jimi Hendrix.

The location was visually magnificent but ill-suited for a concert: the wind from the sea blew the sound from the audience and the stage was overlooked by a large hill that made it a virtually free concert to anybody who didn't have a ticket.

At Fort Campbell, Hendrix met some other musicians that would be instrumental in his formation as an artist and who would serve as close friends for the rest of his short life.
