Trek in the Park is a real thing put on by theater company Atomic Arts during the summer. So far they have performed the classic Star Trek episodes "Amok Time", "Space Seed", "Mirror Mirror", "Journey to Babel" and "The Trouble With Tribbles."
In 2012 Trek in the Park relocated to Cathedral Park.

Portlandia's helicopter parents work hard to get Grover into Shooting Star Preschool in season 2. These scenes were shot at Buckman Elementary (long name: Buckman Arts Focus Elementary School) in Southeast Portland.
