From kindergarten to 8th grade, Bruce Springsteen attended school here (1954 to 1963). Later, the Boss would recollect being at odds with the structure of Catholic school, but having it lead to a "very active spiritual life." Traces of Irish-Catholic hymns can be heard in some of his work.

The Boss came back to the school to play a benefit acoustic show in the gymnasium on Nov. 8, 1996, and only Freehold residents were allowed to purchase tickets.

Doug and Adele Springsteen moved Bruce and his sister, Ginny, here around 1955. The Springsteens lived on the left side of the duplex for about eight years. It was here that Springsteen saw Presley on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1956. A week later, he rented his first guitar from Freehold Music Center on Main Street.

In 1984, Springsteen did a photo shoot here that included a shot of him leaning next to a tree. It appeared in the Born in the U.S.A. liner notes.

Before the St. Paul Civic Center was torn down to make room for the Xcel Energy Center, it was the setting for the ultra-cheesy and thoroughly lovable "Dancing in the Dark" video.

From wikipedia: "On June 28, 1984, Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, actress Courteney Cox and 200 extras filmed the Brian De Palma-directed music video for 'Dancing in the Dark' at the arena, one day before Springsteen's 1984 Born in the U.S.A. Tour formally opened at the arena."
