Established in 1945, Johnnie's Drive-In is a fixture of the Tupelo, MS community.

Elvis Presley used to frequent Johnnie's to have an RC Cola and a hamburger when he lived here as a kid. He would visit the location whenever he came through on tour, and the restaurant features an "Elvis Booth." Throughout Johnnie's are many pictures and other Elvis memorabilia.

In 1946, Elvis Presley's mother was at this hardware store with her son. To distract Elvis from the .22 rifles, she showed him the guitars. After Elvis began strumming one, she purchased him his first guitar at this location.

The pastor at their church taught him how to play, and Elvis with his guitar became a regular sight around town.

lawhon elementary school

Elvis Presley went to elementary school at Lawhon Elementary School in Tupelo, MS.

In the second grade, Elvis won second prize at the Mississippi Alabama Fair talent contest where he sang "Old Shep." A teacher had recognized Elvis's talent and organized for him to enter the talent show.

elvis’s twin brother’s grave

Elvis Presley had a twin brother who was stillborn. Jesse Garon Presley was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave at the Priceville Cemetery.

Elvis dodged another bullet on the evening of April 5, 1936, when he survived the fourth deadliest tornado in US history that took 233 lives in Tupelo.

Elvis Presley was born at this location in Jan. 8, 1935, in the house that his father built for $180. Although the family moved occasionally, they lived mostly in the Tupelo area until 1948 when they left for Memphis.

The city of Tupelo bought the house and land with money from a 1956 Elvis concert, who wanted a park for neighborhood children. Today, the birthplace is part of the 15-acre Elvis Presley Park. On the grounds include the house where he was born, a museum, and a chapel.
