The Star Club had a capacity for two thousand people, as well as cinema-style seating.

The Beatles played here from April 13, 1962 to May 31, 1962. It was at this time that they learned of (former bass player) Stu Sutcliffe's death.

They started another round of performances November 1, 1962 until their last performance on December 31, 1962. Ringo Starr had joined the band as the drummer by this point.

Portions of their final performance here at this location were recorded, and a remixed version was released in 1977 as "Live! at the Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany; 1962."

The club closed on December 31, 1969, and the building was destroyed by a fire in 1987.

Portions of their final performances were taped with a portable recorder by an associate of Ted "King Size" Taylor of the Dominoes, another group playing at the club. That album is called, "The Beatles: Live! at the Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany; 1962." It has been released through a number of labels and formats since its first pressing in 1977 on Bellaphon Records.
