st. vincent court

from the pharcyde, spike jonze posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat

In the Spike Jonze-directed video for "Drop", The Pharcyde started (or ended depending on how you look at it) their walk through Los Angeles at St. Vincent Court. The video was filmed with them walking backwards and then it was reversed.

St. Vincent Court is a downtown back alley that is now home to a number of storefronts and restaurants. It has been described as charming, but you wouldn't know that from the 1996 video where the alley is mostly deserted.

las vegas hilton casino

from beastie boys, spike jonze posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat

Some of the "Sure Shot" music video was shot in and around the Las Vegas Hilton Casino when the Beastie Boys were in Las Vegas for Lollapalooza in the summer of '94. They don't allow recording inside the casino, but Spike Jonze carried the camera inside and captured that footage on the sly. Don't tell.

dome village

from beastie boys, spike jonze posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat

Parts of Spike Jonze's video for "Sure Shot" by the Beastie Boys were filmed among the igloo-like domes of Dome Village in downtown Los Angeles.

Dome Village was founded in 1993 to provide non-traditional housing for homeless people. The fiberglass geodesic domes were designed by Craig Chamberlain, a former student of Buckminster Fuller. Each unit cost $10,000 and could house up to 34 tenants. The residents were evicted and the domes auctioned off in 2006 when the property owner raised the rent on the land where the domes were set up.

The video for Fatboy Slim's "Praise You", directed by Spike Jonze, was filmed here in the lobby of the Bruin Theatre in Los Angeles. Spike Jonze as Richard Koufey along with The Torrance Community Dance Group dance to the song playing from a boombox as people wait in line to buy tickets.

nightingale bar

from daft punk, spike jonze posted in music by nevereatshreddedwheat

Spike Jonze's music video for Daft Punk's "Da Funk," a story called "Big City Nights" about an anthropomorphized dog, was filmed in New York's East Village. In the last sad shot, Charles the dog is left standing in front of the old Nightingale Bar on 2nd Ave and 13th St. after he doesn't follow the girl on the bus because he doesn't want to abandon his boombox.

Nightingale's used to be a dive bar. Jam bands like Spin Doctors and Blues Traveler played here early on in their careers, but it's since been remodeled.
