the dakota
from john lennon posted in music by crabapple
The Dakota is a co-op apartment building located at the northwest corner of 72nd Street and Central Park West in New York City.
Allegedly, the reason it was called the Dakota is because when it was constructed in 1880, the Upper West Side was considered as open and remote as Dakota territory.
John Lennon moved here in 1973, and was murdered outside the building by Mark David Chapman on December 8, 1980.

from buddy holly, ritchie valens, big bopper posted in music by crabapple
About one quarter of a mile west of the intersection of 315th Street and Gull Avenue, five miles (8 km) north of Clear Lake, there is a monument depicting a steel guitar and a set of three records bearing the names of each of the three performers (Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper) and the pilot (Roger Peterson) that died when their plane crashed on February 3, 1959.
The entrance to the crash site is marked by a large plasma-cut steel copy of Holly's signature glasses.
A road originating near The Surf Ballroom and extending north past the west of the crash site is now known as Buddy Holly Place.
samarkand hotel

On September 18, 1970, Jimi Hendrix went to the basement apartment of his girlfriend, Monika Dannemann, at this location (apartment #22).
Hendrix had taken 9 of her prescribed Vesparax sleeping pills to help him sleep. This particular brand of Belgian sleeping pill was a much stronger presciption then he was used to, and the mix of red wine and sleeping pills cause him to asphyxiate on his own vomit. He was 27 years old.
There are a number of the prerequisite conspiracy theories surrounding Hendrix's death, but those are the established facts.

from janis joplin posted in music by pete_nice
Janis Joplin died at the Landmark Motor Hotel (currently known as the Highland Gardens) on Sunday, October 4, 1970 of a heroin overdose.
Earlier the previous evening, Joplin had been at Barney's Beanery with some cohorts. Joplin was apparently bummed out that she had been stood up by her friends recently, and had been given a particularly potent batch of heroin.
When Joplin failed to show up at her recording session at Sunset Sound Records on October 4, her producer Paul Rothchild visited the Landmark Motor Hotel. He discovered Joplin's body in her room (#105). She was 27 years old.
